Movember.

via jarrydwilliams.blogspot.com

No, I will not participating as I have very poor facial hair growing abilities. However it is a well known fact that my boy Pat 'The Big Man' Davis - Meehan grows a mean moussi, and sometimes beard. So I will be putting all my support into Patto and his mates in team 'Mo Crescent'.

It's for a great cause [Proceeds go towards mens health], so if you want to get behind the boys and donate click here or visit au.movember.com/mospace/859742/.

Don't forget to check back here for a picture of The Big Man's ridiculously epic mo!

Peace.

Red Bull Performance Camp

We're a bit late with this post, but thought we should put it up just incase you have'nt seen it.

In August Scotty James hit up the Red Bull Performance Snowboard Camp. It was pretty much just a bunch of young Red Bull riders getting their shred on - and these kids are definately smashing it.

This is Scottys video from the camp. Enjoy

One Hit Wonder Begins.

via samuelmurphy.com

The One Hit Wonder event started yesterday and today I headed upto Thredbo to check out what all the hype was about.
The jump really is quite big. There is also a hip on the side which looks pretty fun.

I forgot my camera today so here are some photo’s courtesy of Snowboarder Mag.

I’ll make sure to take a couple of snaps up there tomorrow.

Cardies Backcountry

via http://samuelmurphy.com/

Yesterday we went riding at Cardrona. The pipe was in super good condition. The difference in pipe’s between Cardrona and Snowpark is crazy, Cardrona’s is alot bigger and narrower whereas Snowpark’s is smaller and considerably wider...

...After they closed the pipe we went free riding a little bit because the weather is meant to be coming in the next few days.

We hiked out the back of Cardrona in search of fresh snow. Alot of hiking for some not epic snow.

We hiked to almost the top of the bowl you can see on the left.

Nate Blogs World Juniors

The Nate Johnstone Blog via Pop Mag

Hey guys, just a quick update. I had World Juniors last week up at Cardrona. Things ended up going pretty well for me on comp day, the pipe was in real good condition and everything was feeling really good.
I ended up placing 2nd, which was great for me coming off an injury. The run in the finals that got me 2nd was fs 9, bs 9, fs 7, cab 10, fs melon. I’m hoping the weather gets better over here in NZ so I can get some more pipe riding in and start doing a little bit of filming with my GoPro before heading back to Australia in 2 weeks...

Steinbacher Ouch.

via jarrydwilliams.blogpot.com

Today we went up to Snow Park but unfortunately after three runs we ended up here...

Yep, Charley fell in the pipe and dislocated his shoulder... no fun at all. He is about to head down to the medical center to get an X-Ray, so hopefully the results are good.

Nate Johnstone Blogs Ripcurl Freeride Pro

The Nate Johnstone Blog care of Pop Mag

So I have just finished up with the Ripcurl Freeride Pro here in Aus. It turned out pretty good this year as we have a awesome day riding on the Tuesday with sunny blue sky’s and some good snow which was great to kick start the event.

I ended up qualifying in 4th followed by Ben Mates & Pete Long tying in 2nd and then the Kiwi Mitch Brown taking out day 1 qualifiers with a sweet under flip off the bottom jump.

Unfortunately the weather came in for the next 2 days and we didn’t get a chance to run the finals so results of the event ended up coming off day 1 qualifiers results.

The Throw Down event was on the Wednesday night and Charles and the boys really put something special together this year. Team Ripcurl had Kieran McLaughlin taking out 1st place with a sweet gap 360 onto the down box. But all in all it turned out to be a great fun event again. Thanks to Ripcurl for putting on a great event again this year.

Junior Worlds: Training

via jarrydwilliams.blogspot.com

The last two mornings we have had official practice in the Cadrona halfpipe. It was really good to get back into their pipe after a fair stint at Snow Park. We have been pretty lucky with the weather so far and pipe was/is in awesome condition. I can't wait to ride it again tommorow.

This is how the pipe was looking this morning.
[I stole this photo from Sam. Taken by Benny A]

There are three qualification heats tommorow. I am in the second, Scotty James is in the third and all the other boys [Nate, Jase, Sam and Charlie] are in the first. The top two riders from each heat advance directly into the final on Wednesday. The next four placed riders in each heat advance into a semi-final also to be held on Wednesday. Six riders from the semi go through to make it a twelve man final...

Sam Murphy Blogs Junior Worlds

via samuelmurphy.com

This arvo we had the opening ceremony for junior world champs. It was a pretty crazzy experience all the Athletes from all countries where there.
We had the parade through the main street of Wanaka followed by a tradition Maori ceremony and the accepting of permission to enter the Maori land peacefully.

The police closed off a section of the main street for us to walk down, there were people on each side of the road cheering us on and it was pretty amazing to have all these people out there for us and all this effort put into the event.

Nate Johnstone Blogs NZ Open

The Nate Johnstone Blog care of Pop Mag

I Have been over in NZ now for about 2 weeks and have had some really fun sunny days shredding with the NSWIS boys. We have been playing around with my Go Pro over the past week and got a little bit of footage together so Charlie Steinbacher put together a small edit of all of us cruising around Snowpark and Cardrona. I’ll hopefully try put it up soon.

I’m hoping to keep filming a bit more over the Southern Hemi season so hopefully there should be some more video edits on the way. I had the Burton NZ Open on today and lucky enough it ended up being a pearl’a of a day with sunny sky’s and some good shredding. I-Pod took out 1st followed by Taku Hiraoka (this 14yr old Japanese kid coming in 2nd who blew everyone’s mind) and Louie Vito with some insane doubles coming in 3rd. Also Mitch Brown had a cracker of a 1st run placing in 9th and Scotty James throwing down on the last hit with a sick double alley chuck but unfortunately not landing but impressed the judges for sure.. I didn’t end up going very well, my ankle has been giving me a little grief the past 2 days, but she should be all good for the Ripcurl Freeride Pro next week in Aus. I’ll have another update from the Rip curl Freeride Pro next week.

This format should work way better so start checking back in right here at comradesaus.blogspot.com.

Happy Shredding.

PDM- Cribs

This video we made is a insight into how our newest Comrade, Patrick Davis Meehan, does.
He actually does have a room he was just kind enough to give it up to our friend and coach Anthony for 10 days. The edits a bit rough because my computer died along with my editing suite, but Windows Movie Maker is good enough! Enjoy

Scotty Do Good.

As you may have read in our previous post... or if you havent had your head in the sand for the last few weeks... you would of heard that Scotty James, at 16, competed at his first Olympic Games on Wednesday the 17th. Scotty came 21st in the Halfpipe event, which is a pretty impressive result, only four places from making semi-finals. So on behald of the rest of the Comrades I would just like to take this opportunity to congratulate Scotty - we're real proud of you buddy.

You also would have heard of Torah Bright (Scotty's training partner / defacto big sister) winning herself the gold medal in the womens event. This medal was well deserved and the first ever medal won for snowboarding in Australia. Torah has done us.. and all of Australia proud.
On this note a big pat on the bag is due for Ben Bright who coached both Torah and Scotty.

Also a big well done to Holly Crawford and Ben Mates who cam 8th and 17th respectivelly.

SCOTTY JAMES QUALIFIES FOR GAMES (hey that rhymes)

Yes that's right, Comrade Scotty James did it. Finishing in 13th place at the FIS World Cup in Calgary yesterday easily sustains Scotty with enough FIS points to ride at the Olympics for halfpipe. This is the best possible scenario since the devastation of Nates injury. What this means is that if Nate is unable to compete at the games Scotty (at the age of 16) along with Ben Mates will head to Vancouver next month, this is surely to be a life altering experience for the youngest Comrade.

Scotty your an absolute champ! Do us proud buddy!

The Comrades

Not so good news.

As most people would have heard, be it on the grapevine or in the Australian media, Aussie Olympic Team member and Comrade Nate Johnstone injured himself in Otsego Resort, Michigan.

Nate was learning cab double corks into an airbag at the resort earlier this week and one one attempt landed one awkwardly leaving him with a fractured fibia (ankle / lower leg). Now without speaking the obvious it is unlikely that our friend Nate will be able to compete in the games, but hey crazier stuff has happened. As Ben Mates (who was with Nate in Michigan at the time) put so well on his blog 'It is a huge bummer for Australian Snowboarding' but 'he will be back bigger and better. Nate will be well missed at the games, it certainly wont be as exciting for us to watch, that's for sure.

Here is a photo poached from Matesy's blog of Nates ankle.

If there is a silver lining to this devastation it would be that comrade Scotty James is now able to qualify for Nate's position. Scotty just needs to finish up in the top 19 places in the next world cup in calgary. Good Luck Scotty!

Keep your chin up Nate, we hope you have a speedy recovery so we can ride together soon!

Fresh Blood.

Hi everyone. We have a new comrade by the name of Patrick Davis - Meehan. We have been riding with Patto (a.k.a The Big Man, a.k.a Onyx) alot over the last year or so and he has really stepped up his riding. Being that he is riding sweet and the fact that it is pretty difficult not to have a good time with Onyx around, we thought it was a good time to make him one of us. Keep an eye out because I expect big things from this one.

Here are a couple of bad photos from Pattos' facebook.
