Rip Curl Freeride Pro

Last week the Rip Curl Freeride Pro was held on the Bluff up at Thredbo. It is one of the funnest comps on in Australia and Nate and Jarryd were both there representing Comrades!!!

The first day (wednesday) was pretty average with rain, wind a very poor visabilty, but both of the comrades qualified for finals the next day.

The weather was a fair bit better on thursday, but not perfect. Nate had 2 awesome runs, throwing down 3's off the rock drop, a switch back 5 off the hip and in his second run half cabbing an awesome rock butter down the bottom of the bluff. Jarryd kept it a bit more simple with a 3 off the hip, gapping the same rock butter Nate hit in his first run and hitting the rock butter in his second.

Nate and Jarryd's solid riding paid off with Nate taking out 1st place and Jarryd tied up for 3rd with Pete Long... Ben Mates pulled up 2nd.

Hut Jam

So on the weekend Tys and Jarryd did the Mountain Dew Battle for supremecy.
The set up was crazy. starting with 2 down bars at the top, then a picnic table and a tyre bonk leading into the infamous hut.
There were a fair few options for the hut, you could gap it, gap to the downside of the roof, ride up and down the roof, hit the box-downbar, and the list goes on.

Congrats to the Quicksilver team who took out the event, and the Burton team who took out best trick.

Theres a video on the popmag website @ http://www.popmag.com.au/videos/ (you might have to scroll down a bit). We will post some pics as they come in. And wil lgive you a heads up when the event will be televised.

Peace.

Home

Over the last week in Mammoth the weather started closing in. We got about 3 days straight of rain, and to add to this the pipe cutter broke. Considering the parks had already closed the first week of out trip this left us with very little to do. So we made the call and decided to come home early.

30+ hours of travel and we finally arrived home to Aus. Sam, Nate and Charlie flew Reno> San Fran > Sydney... but Jase and Jarryd got the milk run. Parting from the other guys at San Fran the then went > LA > Sydney > Melbourne.

Now we await the Australian season, which by the look of the webcams today, isnt too far off.

Ouch!

Unfortunately on Sunday Comrade Jason Maxfield dislocated his left shoulder for the 7th time. We wish Jase a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the hill ASAP.

Friend of Comrades Kendall Brown also cracked some ribs and headed home early. Get well soon KB!

Mammoth MTB

Sam – Jason – Nate – Jarryd – Charlie (Van Dutie)

So after a few days on the hill it was time for a day off.
However rather than just chilling by the pool and taking in the sun we piled in the Red Rocket (The beautiful maroon beast pictured below), rented some mountain bikes and headed up the road to the top of Mammoth.

We did about 4 runs from top to bottom, each time trying to find new trails and pedalling up a storm to make each other eat dust... which there was lots of.
Jarryd claimed the first bail... and the second one. Going off the trail and over the handlebars. We all had a rad time bush bashing and trying not to lose it as we hit little patches of snow but after a couple of hours we were pretty beat so we packed it in and headed to Pita Pit.

Who Shot Ya!?

Over the last week Nate has spent about 3 days taking photos with Tyler Henderson, a US photographer from the East Coast. They got a whole bunch of incredible shots in the Mammoth Main Park and Pipe and down at the hot springs. The photo's will be in the next issue of Tranfer Magazine, so be sure to check it out.

Here's a little video of Nate shredding over the last week or so.

California Love

Yep, Comrades are in Cali!

After a big day of travel Jarryd, Jason, Nate, Sam and Charlie are at Mamoth Mountain, CA. However Tyson is in back at home relaxing in Mansfield as is Scotty chilling in Melbourne town. The biggest highlight of our travels would have to be the Airport Security lady hooning around on a Segway which was pretty fitting as we had all just watched the Segway antics of Paul Blart: Mall Cop on the plane. After 4 hours crammed in the back of the Red Rocket driving thru the Hot Nevada and California Sun we finially arrived to Mammoth - our home for the next few weeks.

Tuesday we were all pretty jet lagged but sure enough the clock in Charlie's room was wrong so at about seven O'Clock he woke us all up ready to ride. We headed up the hill a short while later and got our passes sorted and what not then headed up the chair with anticipation. Surprisingly enough there was a decent cover and no one got core shots... pretty decent for riding in late May. Unfortunatly Charlie hurt is back in the pipe and we are all still unsure of how long he is off snow for. Hopefully he will be back on the snow shredding in the next few days after a physio visit. We left the hill (some of us sunburnt) as a nasty looking storm crept in. The Afternoon was spent playing tennis in the Cali sunshine.
Today (Wednesday) was pretty much the same as Tuesday but less hectic as we did'nt have to shop and what not.

We are out here for 3 weeks so check back for photos.

First Issues

As the Australian winter approaches, first issues of local snowboard mags start to pop up in news agencies and this year the Comrades are pretty well represented.

Australian Snowboarder Magazine
Nate has a full page shot (First Words Section) , a two page Rip Curl ad, and a page for the Rip Curl Freeride Pro

Jarryd got a decent shot with a rundown of his list of injuries (News - Medic Section).

Samboss got a good little shot and props taking out the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage Series (Comp Calender Section) .

Transfer Magazine
This is a new magazine hot off the press in Australia and Comrades are well spoken for by Samboss and Jason who both have photos in the first ever issue.

We would just like to thank Ryan Willmont and Russel Holt for producing some great mags, and letting us be apart of it all.

What is Comrades?

Comrades is a bunch of young Australian snowboarders who love to ride and travel the world living the dream.

Nathan Johnstone . Jarryd Williams . Sam Murphy . Charlie Steinbacher . Jason Maxfield . Tyson Pollard . Scotty James

Keep an eye out...
